What is Wet & Dry Magnetic Particle Testing?
Magnetic particle testing involves applying a magnetic field to a ferromagnetic material and then introducing magnetic particles. These particles gather at areas where there are surface or near-surface discontinuities, making the defects visible. There are two main methods: wet magnetic particle testing and dry magnetic particle testing.
Wet Magnetic Particle Testing
In wet MPT, a liquid suspension containing magnetic particles is applied to the material's surface. The liquid carrier allows the particles to flow into small cracks and defects, enhancing the visibility of discontinuities under appropriate lighting conditions.
Dry Magnetic Particle Testing
Dry MPT involves applying dry magnetic particles directly to the material's surface. This method is particularly effective for rough or irregular surfaces where the liquid carrier might not flow easily. The dry particles gather at defect sites, making them visible under appropriate lighting.
How Does It Work?
- Preparation: The surface of the material is cleaned to remove any dirt, grease, or other contaminants that could interfere with the test.
- Magnetization: A magnetic field is applied to the material using a magnetic yoke, coil, or other methods.
- Particle Application: Magnetic particles (wet or dry) are applied to the surface of the material.
- Inspection: The surface is inspected under appropriate lighting conditions. Magnetic particles gather at areas with discontinuities, making defects visible to the inspector.
- Demagnetization: After the inspection, the material is demagnetized to remove any residual magnetic field.
